Empowering Faurecia’s UX Interface

Legendary French automotive system supplier Faurecia had a vision: to dispense with its long-standing image as a traditional car-seat supplier and transform itself into a company offering a truly holistic in-car experience for drivers and passengers alike. In designaffairs, it found the perfect partner to help make its vision a reality.

For the 2019 CES in Las Vegas, Faurecia wanted to present a range of user experiences that would showcase its work on the ‘Cockpit of the Future’.

designaffairs was tasked with supporting this effort, not only from a usability point of view but also from a visual-design perspective in order to create an optimal user experience for visitors to the CES.

Firstly, we had to consolidate the displayed screen content from a user-interaction and usability point of view. So we introduced wireframes ─ visual representations of the user interface, stripped of any visual design or branding elements ─ into a story that visitors could explore, and then we matched them with the interactive technology provided in the bucket seat.

As time and resources were at a premium, this was particularly challenging. That said, it was a truly rewarding experience for us to know that we were centrally involved in delivering future-driven concepts and imaginative prototypes on a world-renowned stage like the CES.

Another big challenge for us was to incorporate everything into a UI design. Our designers did some amazing work in close cooperation with Faurecia’s own design department. In addition to meeting the client’s exacting design expectations, we also had to display a forward-looking visual design. To bind everything together, we conducted a series of workshops to play through the various scenarios and to have a deeper look at usability and visual design.

In the end, both teams collaborated brilliantly together, both on a professional and a human level. One small anecdote bears this out. Such was his thorough attention to detail in investigating and analysing every single aspect of the user experience that one of our usability engineers ended up being referred to as the “usability officer” by the client’s project lead!

The success of our partnership with Faurecia resulted in a highly productive CES for the client, giving it a fantastic opportunity to showcase its award-winning design work to the world.

All in all, it was ‘mission accomplished’ for Faurecia and designaffairs.
